The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down – Section 4

The fourth and final section of The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down really stayed with me after I finished the book. It was so meaningful, because by this point you understand everyone involved so much better. You’re not just reading about a medical case anymore. You’re reading about real people who were trying their best, even when things kept going wrong.

What I liked most about this section is how honest it is. There’s no clean ending where everything magically works out. Instead, it shows the long-term impact of all the misunderstandings and good intentions that didn’t quite line up. It made the story feel real. Sometimes people do care and do try. But sometimes that still isn’t enough.

I also appreciated how the book never fully blames one side. By the end, it’s clear that both the doctors and Lia’s family loved her deeply, but the system around them failed to bring those worlds together. That idea stuck with me because it shows how important cultural understanding is, especially in healthcare. Knowledge alone isn’t enough if there’s no empathy behind it.

I’d honestly recommend this book to anyone, especially people interested in medicine, psychology, or social issues. It’s not an easy read, but it’s an important one. It changed the way I think about health, culture, and communication, and I’m glad I took the time to read it.

Next up on my reading list is Medical Apartheid by Harriet A. Washington. I’m excited to dive into it and keep learning.
